Animals in the News
The world of animals, often threatened, sometimes restored, and ways we can help conserve and protect the animals in our lives
“Animals are passing from our lives.” So, in a melancholy moment, the poet Philip Levine titled one of his lyrics, centered on a pig bound for slaughter. Animals are passing from our lives indeed, at an appalling rate, and the news is dire and ever more so each day.
*Animals in the News* will focus on these disappearances and what they mean to the larger world. What, for instance, might a world without whales look like? What do whales bring to the oceanic ecosystems they inhabit? At the same time, because unremitting bad news can be a drag, I’ll be on the lookout for success stories to report as well. The free edition will be made up of curated, commented-upon stories from all over the world, sourced and linked, while the subscribers’ edition will include original essays, interviews, and other material. Additionally, subscribers will receive periodic special issues of news devoted to a single animal, ecosystem, or conservation endeavor.
I am the author of more than 40 books, including In the Presence of Wolves, A Desert Bestiary, and Aelian’s On the Nature of Animals, and of more than 7,000 periodical pieces, hundreds of them about animals. I am also a widely published photographer.
